BRYDEE ROOD /
TE RA TE RA TE RA BLACK HOLE!

The Wellington Company in partnership with the WCC have commissioned internationally-recognised artist Brydee Rood to produce a temporary installation for the Willis Central construction site. Here is the final result and what Brydee has to say about her artwork.

“To work with the 5 star green philosophy of the new eco sustainable Telecom office building design I have developed a conceptual project working with concepts and cycles of the greater universe. Our human impact on earth has become the topic of many debates in present times, with the need to realise the changes and patterns now occurring in the world it is important to remember that we are temporary – we need to step lightly into the future if we have any hope of reversing some of the more permanent damages that we human beings and our material lifestyles have caused to the planet; its wildlife and ecosystems.

“By day the artwork will read Te Ra Te Ra Te Ra ... "The Sun The Sun The Sun" in Te Reo Maori repeated 7 times in a burning orange text. The repetitive words have poetical rhythm and numerically reflect a weekly cycle. The lights subside into a delicate trail of dots. By teasing out a Day and Night experience the work becomes cyclical: The lights will rest whilst the solar panels charge in the light of the sun. As daylight fades "Black Hole Black Hole" is revealed, a starry sentence: Visible to pedestrians, on foot, in car or bus.

“I think it is far more interesting to have a work changing between night and day as opposed to something static. This installation is a play on both the temporary nature of the project and in the wider context of humans in the universe. In essence it is a perfect fit with the context as it coexists with the changing nature of art in a public space and our planet's relationship to the sun in the universe.”

The artwork will be in place until late next year, when the five-star 'green' Willis Central building is completed.
